Re: keeping game items in cabins, but not obscured by mundane props, how does that interface with things carried in bags and pouches that might get set down in the cabin? E.g. if I leave my bag in my cabin that contains my journal, some packets, and a handful of components, do I need to take the components out and set them down somewhere less obscured? Would it be enough to set the bag itself somewhere separate from other items?

Something to clarify (I'll edit the section shortly): there's a distinction between obviously out-of-game stuff, like towels and food and meds (which you should not mess with at all) and mundane props, like a character bag (which you can rummage through but not steal, unless it's got a blue sticker).
If you are searching someone's cabin, you can look through "stuff" but should stop "digging" in a spot as soon as you hit toiletries or granola bars or, like, socks. (So don't hide game stuff in/under those.) But you can open and robble an obviously-not-player-luggage bag, and just not take the bag itself, or the gloves sticking out of a pocket...

Setting the bag somewhere separate would be fine. In fact (writing in "advice" voice, not rules) the out-of-game stuff is what I'd want sitting out in an obvious don't-bother-searching-this-bed way, while I'd hide the game bag somewhere else.
For context, I can't say for sure whether NPCs would be robbing cabins for magicite or whatever...but other PCs could be trying to find the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch (or some other Plot Device), and they think you've stashed it in your cabin...
The teaser file in google drive has been updated to distinguish between mundane props and all-the-way-out-of-game materials, for cabins/tents. (I've also added an outline bit to the unpublished "Rules Notes" section that'll you'll see eventually.)
Some core rules:

Ok thank you! That makes more sense than what I was interpreting the rules as here
