The Brannis Protectorate is a magocracy with most of its national cares tied up in maintaining
one of the biggest works of artifice and enchantment on the continent, the Breakwaters. Following the Gelephian Mistake
the war-mages of Brannis, already preparing for war against Gelephia, were able to hastily adapt the shields on their border
fortresses to slow and divert the spread of the Great Shimmer. Since it only exists by virtue of its continuing efforts to hold
back the Mist, Brannis is one of the centers of magical research and development into mist-technology, and the modern
materiality lantern owes its development to the advances of the Mistwatchers Institute (MWI).
While originally a purely military institution, in 1447 MWI opened its doors to civilian researchers in Brannis, and now, as of
1516 they have begun accepting prospective researchers from other nations, although foreign researchers are still limited
to only a subset of the otherwise-classified projects under development.

Brannis (along with Muscosao and Yalhamir) is also one of the sponsors of the Guild of Roadwardens, one of the member-
organizations of the Honorable Order of Misthunters, and primarily serves to keep the narrow coastline passes that still allow non-shimmer travel between those four nations from being overrun by mistborn monsters.
