Formerly the westernmost region of the Gnomali Republic, following the civil war of 794, those portions of the Western Republic that neither consolidated into Lorthidad nor ended up under the control of the Eastern Republic’s general Hana formed the nation of Horlochen, taken its name from the largest Gnomali province remaining inside its borders. In the late 800s, repeated expeditions from the Kingdom of Jardine carved off increasingly large sections of Horlochen’s coastline, further diminishing Horlochen’s holdings.
The reverse of Horlochen’s slow decline came about, not from any direct action on its part, but from the unexpected fallout of the Gelephian Disaster. Following the disaster, Jardinian attention was largely redirected to a losing battle to retain its southern coastal colonies that were now being claimed by Nonoviga, and Horlochen used this opportunity to launch a campaign of liberation, reconsolidating their western coast.
Fears of Jardinian re-expansion fueled a rapid boom in naval power for a reinvigorated Horlochen, and in the new millennium it emerged as the preeminent power on the Sea of Asherah, forging lasting alliances and trade agreements with Gaolund to further constrain Jardinian power. In the modern era, Horlochen now looks North as well, acting as a major funding source for overseas exploration and trade to other continents.
