The Commonwealth of Jardine is the remaining territories of the former Kingdom of Jardine, which at its peak included the entire island of Mysidia as well as substantial colonies, including parts of what are now Nonoviga and Horlochen, as well as the Island of Denal. When the Royal Army of Jardine came out the worse in Nonoviga’s war of expansion following the Gelephian Disaster, the Denal colony took the opportunity to secede, becoming part of the nation of Gaolund (and setting the stage for tension between Gaolund and Jardine). In the following decade, the losses of overseas colonies contributed to the swing of national opinion against the Kingdom’s hereditary monarchy, and in 1024, following the Jardinian Revolution, the Commonwealth of Jardine was formed. While nominally more democratic, the Commonwealth still consolidated the political power of the nation among the historical noble families of the former-Kingdom, albeit with the addition of a newly formed Convocation of Guilds acting as representation for the growing merchant class of the nation.
Since then, Jardine has gone through a slow decline in relevance in Ihlathian politics, including the loss of the Phiander Lowlands in the Northern Emancipation Act of 1392. This has culminated (in the late 1400s) in a growing political movement within the Commonwealth that calls for a return to Jardinian Supremacy, which has manifested most immediately in pushes to establish Jardinian control over the Windy Straits, with more fringe parties calling for returns to the ‘‘traditional borders of Jardine.’’
