Located in the rocky soil between the foothills of the Doribatt mountains and the Coiling Sea, Mirland is a nation poor in arable land but rich in metals and mineral resources. While pieces of Mirland have been occupied over the last 500 years by Jardine, Altruscia and Gaolund, each invader in turn has discovered a simple truth: while the rolling terrain of northern Mirland is easy to occupy, it has little to offer a would-be-conqueror, and the people of Mirland are eminently prepared to retreat into mines and mountain holdfasts that are nearly impossible to assault.
Possibly as a result of this, modern Mirland is, if not precisely isolationist, definitely uninterested in the politics of Ihlathi outside its borders. A constant flow of trade is maintained by only a rare few shipping companies and merchant houses that have managed to secure lucrative contracts with any of the great Mining Consortiums of Mirland. Otherwise, although Mirland makes little to no attempt to police or patrol its borders, the region is generally standoffish, verging on hostile to foreign travelers.
