In the late years of the Gnomali Civil War, opportunistic intervention by the Brannis Protectorate allowed the easternmost coastline of the former Republic to split from the already fragmenting Eastern Block, with the intent of creating a buffer state between Brannis and potential encirclement by an expansionist Gelephia. When the feared northern expansion was halted by Hanarus, Brannis cut back its direct support of the fledgling nation. For the following two centuries, Brannis’ tacit support was nevertheless sufficient to keep the nation relatively stable, but in the wake of the Gelephian Fall, Muscosao found itself largely separated from its patron nation.
Since then, Muscosao has existed in a state of protracted border-dispute with Ekhoron. While large-scale war has only broken out twice, in 1237 and 1317, the border remains heavily militarized and largely unpopulated outside of regularly-placed military outposts. Given that, Muscosao is the greatest sponsor of the Guild of Roadwardens, with a vested interest in keeping a route open for trade to the south.
