The Story:
The Story of the Silver Streamer is a true tale of a whaling vessel that was out in the southern Thamasan Ocean that was damaged in a hunt with a massive whale and started a dangerous and desperate journey to get back to safe harbor in the Castine Bay. The story covers details of the crew, the ship itself and the perilous journey it underwent. Regardless of who tells the story, a few details will remain unchanged such as what the ship was doing, where it was, and certain members of the crew such as the legendary captain Jaxson Seabeard. The story starts in the southern Thamasan Ocean where the whaling ship, the Silver Streamer’s crew faces off against a massive (And possibly supernatural) whale after drifting through a bank of Spirit Fog. During the hunt with the whale, the ship is damaged and many of the crew are killed in the fighting. This is one of the many parts of the story where Tardel Mangrove, the least liked member of the crew is said to have died. The crew of the ship then tries to navigate the ship back to the harbor of Tarvovesta. At the beginning of the journey, the Silver Streamer comes across a pod of Manta Rays which starts to lead them back to safe harbor. There are several portions in the middle of the story where the crew faces other challenges and trials, all the while wishing to see their loved ones again and putting their faith into following the Manta Rays. The middle of the story is usually the part that is changed around the most, with entire sections being added or removed depending on who tells the story. At the end of the story, the whale that had damaged the ship returns to try and destroy the Silver Streamer once and for all, right as Tarvovesta is appearing in the distance. The story concludes with the pod of Manta Rays moving to scare off the whale and save the Silver Streamer and its crew. Historically, when the crew returned to the city and told its story to the citizens of the city, the Manta Ray quickly became a beloved animal and symbol of the city and naval culture around the Castine Bay in general.
History and Culture:
The story of The Silver Streamer is one of, if not, the most famous story told about the Gaolund naval tradition. Nearly all citizens of the Castine Coastal Region have heard some version of this story and many pieces of it have become foundational parts of the region’s culture. The story itself is very simple but has been retold many times and the details of the story seem to change depending on who is telling the story as different demographics will put emphasis on the parts of the story that are more important to them. Those that work in the sea will focus on Manta Ray saving the crew of the Silver Streamer while the family of those people will focus on the stories of longing to be home. The wealthy focus on the ship being saved while the poor focus on the hard working crew. The story has a lot of different meanings to a lot of different people. The Silver Streamer returned to port in the late fall, and during that time of the year celebrations focused on the sea take place and many people visit either the grave site of Captain Jaxson Seabeard or the site where the remains of the ship itself are kept down by the harbor of Tarvovesta. The remains of the Silver Streamer have become somewhat of a pilgrimage site for anyone who works on the sea and sailors from all over the world visit the location whenever they come to the port. The location is now provided guards by the city of Tarvovesta as over the the years, visitors to the site started to chip away pieces of the ship as keepsakes and significant chunks of the ship (Which was already very damaged) have simply vanished. The Silver Streamer is often the center of art pieces made by local artists. Sculptures, paintings and drawings of the ship and its crew are often seen decorating well appointed estates, schools and naval oriented buildings. Its very common for sailors to have tattoos of either the ship or a Manta Ray in reference to the story.
